Where Talent Meets Opportunity: Building a Future in Welding
When Brett joined Robinson six years ago with a degree in mechanical design, he never expected to become a welder. He was working an entry-level job on the assembly line when, during a major project, an unexpected opportunity arose that would reshape his career.
“They needed something quickly welded up with somebody who had any experience. So I gave it a whack, and they liked what they saw.”
With just a basic six-week welding course under his belt, he impressed his supervisor, who recognized Brett’s aptitude and asked him to take it on as his full-time job.
That spontaneous opportunity led to remarkable career growth. Today, Brett mentors new team members, having trained 7-8 other employees in welding techniques. He also takes pride in Robinson’s work stability and overall culture.
“A lot of other places, they start getting slow on hours, they start doing layoffs. But Robinson will make sure they do whatever they can to make sure that you’re still here, you’re still working. And most of the guys on the floor are like my family – they came to my wedding and baby shower!”
What else keeps Brett at Robinson?
“Just the atmosphere itself. I could go and weld anywhere else, but no one matches our benefits, and the people I work with are great.”
In fact, when a friend at another company offered him another welding position, Brett’s response was simple: “Can you match my benefits?”
Whether it’s camping trips, concerts, or spending time with family, Brett’s flexible schedule makes life easier. His four-day workweek has been particularly valuable as he starts his family.
“I did just get married back in August, and now we’re expecting a baby in April. That extra day of the weekend helps a lot.”
Finally, as an employee-owner, Brett sees long-term value in his work.
“Retirement’s always on everybody’s mind whenever you work somewhere, and I’m more likely going to retire here.”
